Frequently Asked Questions
What is a HEIC file and why can't I open it on Windows?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format used on iPhones and iPads since iOS 11. Windows and most non-Apple apps don't support it natively, which is why photos appear as unsupported or show a generic file icon. Converting to JPG makes them universally compatible.
Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?
HEIC files are already compressed, so converting to JPG at high quality (85% or above) produces results that are visually indistinguishable from the original on screen. At 100% quality the JPG file will be larger than the HEIC but look identical. For sharing or web use, 80β88% is the sweet spot.
Is the conversion done in my browser or on a server?
Everything runs locally in your browser. The HEIC decoder library is downloaded once to your device and then converts your files entirely offline. No images are transmitted to any server.
Can I convert multiple HEIC files at once?
Yes. Select or drag multiple .heic files at once. Click 'Convert All' and each file is processed in sequence. Download them individually or all at once.
Does this tool support HEIF files too?
Yes. HEIF (.heif) is the container format that HEIC uses. Both .heic and .heif files are accepted and converted to JPG exactly the same way.
Why are my iPhone photos in HEIC format?
Apple switched to HEIC as the default format because it produces files roughly half the size of JPG at the same quality, saving storage space on device. You can change this in Settings β Camera β Formats β 'Most Compatible' to shoot in JPG directly, but existing photos will remain as HEIC.
